(Translated By Adrian Chan-Wyles PhD)
At 8:30 am on August 31st, 2022, Dharma Master Guang Sheng passed away peacefully at Yuantong Temple on Tiangong Mountain in Longyan City. He was 92 years old - having left home 45 years ago – and receiving the full Vinaya and Bodhisattva Precepts 43 years ago. On the morning of September 6th, 2022, a Memorial Service and Cremation Ceremony was held at the Yuantong Temple to respectfully bid farewell to Venerable Old Monk Guang Sheng. He held the following posts and positions:

Member of the Advisory Committee of the Buddhist Association of China
Vice Chairman of the Advisory Committee of the Buddhist Association of Fujian Province
Chairman of Fujian Fayan Sect Buddhist Culture Exchange Promotion Association
Honorary President of Longyan Buddhist Association
Head Monk of the Yuantong Temple situated in Longyan City on the Tiangong Mountain

More than 50 Departments and Temples across the country paid tribute by sending condolence telegrams, mourning banners, mourning couplets, and presented flower baskets. The Heads of the Provincial United Front Work Department, the Provincial Ethnic and Religious Affairs Department, and relevant Departments at all levels, colleagues in the Buddhist community, lay believers, and people from all walks of life - came to pay their respects.
The Deputy Secretary-General of the Provincial Buddhist Association and the Executive President of the Longyan Buddhist Association, Dharma Master Guang Bing (光炳) - introduced a Brief Biography of the Venerable Old Monk - Master Guang Sheng:

Master Guang Sheng, the founder of the Tiangongshan [天宫山] Yuantong [圆通] Temple, was ordained as a monk in 1979 by Dharma Master Hui Ying [慧瑛] – being given the formal Dharma-name of “Guang Sheng” [光胜] and the informal Dharma-Name of “Ti Xin” [体心]. In 1998, he inherited the Dharma lineage of Dharma Master Hui Ying and became the 11th Generation successor of the Fayan [法眼] (or “Dharma-Eye”) School. In 2015, the 24th Three-Platform Great Ordination Ceremony was successfully held at Yuantong Temple on Tiangong Mountain. More than 300 Ordination Candidates from all over the country gathered at Yuantong Temple to receive the Vinaya and Bodhisattva Precepts, which marked the beginning of Ordination Transmission in Western Fujian. In 2016, he initiated the establishment of the Fujian Fayan Sect Buddhist Culture Promotion Association - designed to perpetuate the practice of Fayan Ch’an and promote the Fayan Sect's style of Ch’an dialogue and interaction. Dharma Master Guang Sheng followed the Ch’an teachings strictly throughout his life, spared no effort in upholding the True Dao [道] - loving his country and the religion without limit or regret. He stated “We support Buddhist monastics and spread and promote the True Dharma - closely uniting and guiding the broad masses of believers, and actively participating in the cause of building Socialism with Chinese Characteristics!” Master Guang Sheng had a boundless Spirit of Compassion and a tireless dedication to saving the world and rescuing lives. During his lifetime, he made outstanding contributions to the Longyan Buddhist cause - and was deeply respected by the Buddhist community and people from all walks of life. After the memorial service, the cremation ceremony was held, with Master Pufa presiding and Master Miao Deng opening the coffin. The monks present prayed sincerely that Master Guangsheng would never stop wishing to enter Nirvana, and that he would be able to pass away as soon as possible and continue the source of the Dharma. After the Memorial Service, the Cremation Ceremony was held, with Dharma Master Pu Fa [普法] presiding and Master Miao Deng [妙登] opening the coffin. The monks present prayed sincerely that Master Guang Sheng immediately enter Nirvana - and continue to emit the Light of the Dharma.

The Four Groups of Disciples bid farewell to the Old Venerable Monk by solemnly chanting the Buddha’s Name to Generate Great Merit!

Leave as Fate Dictates!
You Will Always Be Remembered!

Adrian Chan-Wyles (釋大道 - Shi Da Dao) is permitted to retain his Buddhist Monastic Dharma-Name within Lay-society by decree of the Government of the People’s Republic of China, and the Chinese Buddhist Association (1992). A Buddhist monastic (and devout lay-practitioner) upholds the highest levels of Vinaya Discipline and Bodhisattva Vows. A Genuine Buddhist ‘Venerates’ the ‘Dao’ (道) as he or she penetrates the ‘Empty Mind-Ground' through meditative insight. A genuine Buddhist is humble, wise and peace-loving – and he or she selflessly serves all in existence in the past, present and the future, and residing within the Ten Directions – whilst retaining a vegetarian- vegan diet. Please be kind to animals!
