Seated Transformation (坐化 – Zuo Hua) Project
Many Chinese Ch’an Buddhist (and Daoist) practitioners leave their bodies sat-up in the crossed-legged meditation posture at the point of physical death. This still happens in China today and is viewed as a demonstration of the most advanced state of profound enlightenment realisation. Not only this, but Ch’an masters have been known to die and then return to their bodies a certain time later – usually to reassure their disciples, and use the situation to further enlighten their minds (that are still suffering from the delusion of attachment to transitory existence). Every serious Ch’an Buddhist practitioner should aim to achieve this method of Seated Transformation:
